Austenitic Stainless Steel Overview

Austenitic Steel is a non-magnetic form of stainless steel. These alloys possess a range of beneficial chemical and mechanical characteristics and are the most commercially popular alloy group within the Stainless Steel family.

Austenitic stainless steels get their name from the high temperature form of Iron with carbon in solid solution, known as austenite, which is non-magnetic. Traditionally, austenitic stainless steels have an 18% chromium, 8% nickel alloy content, commonly known as 18/8 Stainless. As a group, they have excellent toughness and good formability. By increasing the chromium and nickel content, corrosion resistance will increase. Increasing other elements, such as molybdenum, can also further improve corrosion resistance. Austenitic Stainless Steels are not heat treatable. However, cold working can improve their mechanical properties, including strength, hardness, and stress resistance.

The most popular Stainless Steel among manufacturers are the Austenitic 300 Series Alloys. The 300 Series Stainless Steel alloys offer the full range of possibilities available when altering alloying levels. In the fully annealed condition, they are essentially non-magnetic. Nonetheless, cold working of the less alloyed grades will induce structural changes leading to increased levels of magnetism. Grades with a lower carbon content are identifiable with the addition of the “L” after their name. The cost of 300 Series grades fluctuates due to the availability and cost of nickel.

200 Series Alloys contain a lower Nickel content and additional Nitrogen. Consequently, this makes 200 Series Stainless Steels a lower cost alternative to the 300 Series.

The alloy’s high work hardening rate allows for increased strength while maintaining ductility. NITRONIC 32® can be readily hot worked or cold worked, with annealing recommended after severe cold forming.Chemical Processing, Food Processing, Electric Power Distribution, Constructionwire forms, racks/cages, screens, springs, concrete reinforcement, pole line hardware
1.3964--Nitronic® 50 (XM-19)S20910Nitronic® 50 is a austenitic stainless steel strengthened by nitrogen, offering improved corrosion resistance and higher strength than many other austenitic stainless steel grades. Nitronic® 50 is non-magnetic and unlike some other austenitic grades, does not gain magnetic properties even when cold-worked or at sub-zero temperatures. It is ideal for sea water environments due to good resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.Marine, Oil & Gas, Medicalsprings, valves, marine hardware, and boat shafting
HEAT RESISTING AUSTENITICS
1.4828--309S 30900Alloy 309 (1.4828) is a heat resisting stainless steel grade with excellent resistance to oxidation as well as high tensile and creep strengths at elevated temperatures. It offers higher strength and corrosion resistance that 304 (1.4301) and its strength and hardness can be increased further by cold working. After cold working, annealing will help to reduce internal stress.Automotive, Aerospace, Energy, Chemical Processing, Cement, Paper and Pulpaerospace engine parts, gas burner radiators, electrical heating element tubes, energy conversion plants, furnace parts, heat exchangers, automotive exhausts, paper mills, waste incinerators
1.4833X12 Cr Ni 23-13-309SS 30908Considered a heat resisting alloy, the low Carbon version of 309 (1.4828), has improved weldability and minimised carbide precipitation. This alloys provides good resistance to oxidation and high-temperature corrosion combined with good mechanical strength at elevated temperatures. However it is not suited for use in highly carburizing environments.Automotive, Aerospace, Energy, Chemical Processing, Cement, Paper and Pulpaerospace engine parts, gas burner radiators, electrical heating element tubes, energy conversion plants, furnace parts, heat exchangers, automotive exhausts, paper mills
1.4845X8 Cr Ni 25-21-310/ 310SS 31008This alloy is a heat resistant Austenitic Stainless Steel, offering high toughness and superior high-temperature oxidation resistance due to its high Chromium and Nickel content. With excellent toughness to temperatures as low as -267.8°C (-450 °F), this grade has cryogenic applications.Petrochemical Industry, Food Industry, Cryogenic, Power Generationnuclear thermal insulation, furnaces, air heaters, food processing components, cryogenic applications
SUPER AUSTENITICS
1.4547X1CrNiMoCuN20–18–7-254 SMO®S31254Often regarded as a cost effective alternative to high nickel content and titanium alloys, 254 SMO® (1.4547) is a high-alloy super-austenitic stainless steel developed for use in seawater and other aggressive chloride-bearing environments. With a combined high molybdenum and nitrogen content alongside low carbon content, this grade offers exceptional resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion stress cracking, and corrosion fatigue uniform corrosion. 254 SMO® (1.4547) possesses strength that is twice that of the 300 series stainless steels.Marine, Chemical Processing, Food Processing, Oil & Gas, Power Generation, Pharmaceuticaldesalination equipment, saltwater handling, flue gas desulfurization, food processing equipment, heat exchangers, pulp mill bleach systems, and oil distillation
---AL6XNN08367Designed for seawater resistance, this alloy exceeds the performance of conventional duplex stainless steels. It is capable of withstanding other corrosive environments, including chloride and oxidizing media. It can also be a lower a lower-cost alternative when compared with other nickel-base alloys.Marine, Chemical Processing, Oil & Gas, Nuclear Power Generation, Paper and Pulp, Food Processingmixing tanks, heat exchangers, extraction/distillation columns, flue gas scrubbers, pipes, pumps, food processing equipment, caustic chloride systems, pulp/paper production, desalination equipment
1.4529--INCOLOY® 25-6MO AlloyN08926This alloy is a super-austenitic stainless steel, resistant to a wide range of corrosive environments. Additions of molybdenum and nitrogen provide added protection from pitting and crevice corrosion, while copper offers resistance to sulfuric acid conditions. It offers improved performance compared to 316 (1.4401) stainless steel, while remaining a cost-effective alternative to other nickel-based alloy grades.Chemical Processing, Oil & Gas, Nuclear Power Generation, Food Processing, Springsmarine/offshore platform equipment, desalination equipment, heat exchangers, pipes, paper processing equipment, caustic chloride systems, springs
